Subject: Urgent action on injuries and police force at the Tirana protest

Dear [Representative name],

I am writing as a member of the Albanian diaspora living in Belarus. Watching the reports from Tirana has been frightening. I want people who are protesting, passing by or reporting the news to come home safely.

On 13 October 2026, police in Tirana used tear gas and water cannon during a student-led protest. Public footage shows force used as people were restrained or moved. Euronews Albania interviewed a man with a serious leg injury who said he was a bystander and that police hurt him. Injuries to protesters, journalists, police and bystanders have been reported.

Some participants threw stones and lit fires. That does not justify force against others. The Albanian Helsinki Committee said on 13 October that the acts of individuals cannot make an entire assembly violent and that police force must be lawful, necessary and proportionate. Video and the hospital account urgently need independent, person-specific investigation.

Please ask your foreign minister to raise the safety of demonstrators, bystanders, journalists and detainees with the Albanian authorities now; seek preservation of police video, orders and medical records; and press for an independent inquiry into the serious injury and any excessive force. Please also ask what your government will do through its bilateral relations and the OSCE or Council of Europe.
